Ceasefire Begins with Hostage and Prisoner Exchanges in Gaza
Hamas released three Israeli hostages, and Israel freed 90 Palestinian prisoners on Sunday, marking the first day of a ceasefire that has paused a 15-month war in the Gaza Strip, which caused significant destruction and heightened tensions across the Middle East.
The ceasefire allowed many Palestinians to return to destroyed neighborhoods and begin rebuilding their lives. At the same time, trucks carrying essential aid entered the Gaza Strip to provide much-needed relief. Crowds in some areas celebrated, cheering for Hamas fighters who emerged from hiding.
In Ramallah, a large crowd gathered to welcome the released Palestinian prisoners. Fireworks lit up the sky as buses arrived carrying 69 women and 21 teenage boys from the West Bank and Jerusalem. According to Hamas, the released prisoners had been detained in Israeli jails.
Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, hundreds of Israelis gathered outside the defense headquarters to celebrate and watch live footage from Gaza showing the release of three female hostages. The video showed the hostages entering a Red Cross vehicle, surrounded by Hamas fighters.
The Israeli military identified the hostages as Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari. The three women were reunited with their families, with video footage showing them in good health. Emily Damari, who was injured when she was abducted, smiled and hugged her mother while holding up her bandaged hand.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed the nation’s joy over their return, saying to a military commander by phone, "Romi, Doron, and Emily – an entire nation embraces you. Welcome home
